White Horses of the Camargue

I’ve loved horses since I was a child. There is something about their dignity and strength, combined with a certain vulnerability, that has always drawn me to them.

It was natural that I would want to photograph these wonderful animals, and I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit and photograph the stunning white horses of the Camargue.

These horses roam freely through the salt marshes and wetlands of the region, under the care and management of the Gardians — the Camargue’s traditional horsemen, often described as its ‘cowboys’.

I’m particularly drawn to the relationship between the horses and their environment. The vastness of the landscape, the quality of the light and the sense of freedom all contribute to the character of the images.

I also occasionally get the opportunity to photograph horses closer to home, where the surroundings may be very different but that connection remains.
