Venice is probably the most beautiful and photogenic city in the world. The traditional founding is identified with the dedication of the first church, that of San Giacomo on the islet of Rialto, said to have taken place at the stroke of noon on 25 March 421 (the Feast of the Annunciation). It went on to become a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as a very important center of commerce and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This has made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. Venice is built on an archipelago of 117 islands formed by 177 canals in a shallow lagoon, connected by 409 bridges, with almost every form of transport being on the water or by foot. This long and fascinating history is what has made Venice one of the most stunning photographic locations in the world.

During this workshop, we will either being using the excellent waterbus network or walking. Any walking will be on the flat, but we will be walking quite a lot as we explore the city, as this is the best way to get around. If you have an average level of walking fitness, then this shouldn’t be a problem. We will explore small side streets and the canals, stopping for lunch or an Italian coffee, as we watch the gondolas go by. In the evenings, we will eat dinner together and maybe even manage a visit to the famous Harry’s Bar!
We will be staying in one of the best hotels in Venice, the family run Al Codega Hotel , which is only a few minutes away from San Marco and the Grand Canal, so it is exceptionally well located. The hotel has tastefully decorated rooms in classic Venetian style, all with your own private en-suite bathroom. Each room has air conditioning/heating and has a satellite TV, internet wi-fi and a minibar.
We will be out photographing at both dawn and dusk, but with the shorter winter days, we will be back to the hotel before heading out again for dinner. On the day we visit the hidden fishing huts on the lagoon, we’ll be out all day after breakfast until sunset.
A typical day will consist of the following.
6.15am – 8.00am. Sunrise photography, after which we’ll return to the hotel for a well earned breakfast.
8.30am – 9.30am. Breakfast
9.30am – 11.00am. Rest time and an opportunity to download images
11.00am – 12.00pm. Critique session and/or talks on subjects such as vision, composition and post production.
12.00am – 3.00pm. Time to wander around the canals and streets, photographing all aspects of Venice and its people.
3.00pm to 5.00pm. Sunset photography, after which we return to the hotel before heading out for dinner.
7.00pm – 9.00pm. Dinner and a chance to discuss the day.
