The Isle of Harris and Lewis are part of the Outer Hebrides, where the ethereal light and the landscapes are some of the most stunning anywhere in the world. From the endless stretches of white sand beaches to the wild mountains and the standing stones of Callinish, dating from around 3000bc, there is something there for everyone.
We’ll be visiting places with names that are as inspiring as the places they represent, Horgabost, Seilebost, Scarista and Hushinis.
Imagine the rapidly changing weather and light over Luskentyre beach and it’s sense of isolation as it stretches out towards the island of Taransay and you can see why is has been voted one of the top ten beaches in the world. This alone makes a trip to Harris for a photo tour worthwhile!

Equipment needed:
Digital SLR or Mirrorless camera with manual controls
Tripod, ideally with ballhead
Graduated neutral density filters are recommended
Wellington boots
Warm and waterproof clothing
Fitness level: Moderate
While we will drive to all locations, we will typically be walking for up to 20 minutes along beaches and over sand dunes, with some rocky areas. If you have an average level of walking fitness, then this shouldn’t be a problem.
Accommodation:
The Harris Hotel was built in 1865 by the 7th Earl of Dunmore, and was originally called the Tarbert Hotel. At the time, he owned the North Harris Estate and built the hotel as a "sporting retreat" for anglers. The estate has been owned by several individuals of note over the last century such as the Earl of Dunmore, Sir Samuel and Sir Edward Scott, Lord Leverhulme, Sir Tom Sopworth and Lord Brockett.
William Cameron took over the lease of the hotel in 1903 and immediately changed the name of the premises to the Harris Hotel. The Cameron family bought the hotel outright in 1948, and the third and fourth generations, now Morrison, are currently involved in running the business.
The original visitor books, stretching back to the 1880s, are still kept on the premises, and show a number of famous guests have stayed here over the last three centuries. J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, signed the visitor book in 1912, then at the height of his fame as a playwright.
Sample Itinerary:
We will be out photographing at both dawn and dusk, but with the shorter winter days, we will be back to the hotel in time for dinner.
A typical day will consist of the following.
6.30am – 8.30am. Sunrise photography, after which we’ll return to the hotel for a well earned breakfast.
8.30am – 9.30am. Breakfast
9.30am – 11.00am. Rest time and an opportunity to download images
11.00am – 12.00pm. Critique session and/or talks on subjects such as vision, composition and post production.
12.00am – 3.00pm. Photographing at another location (including short lunch break)
3.00pm to 5.30pm. Sunset photography, after which we return to the hotel for dinner.
7.00pm – 9pm. Dinner and a chance to discuss the day.
